About the Dean Chin Jow Ga Federation

This website is dedicated to the memory of the late Jow Ga Master, Sifu Chin Yuk Din-–or as he is also known: Sifu Dean Chin.

Sifu Chin brought the Jow Ga Kung Fu style of martial arts to Washington, DC., and began teaching in 1968. At that time, all of the Jow Ga in America originated from his school. He was a pioneer of many aspects of the American Martial Arts community:

  • One of the first strong representatives of Chinese Martial Arts
  • The first Kung Fu school in Washington, DC to accept non-Chinese members
  • The first predominantly African American martial arts school in the DC area, as well as the first Kung Fu Master with mostly African American students
  • Held the first Full-Contact martial arts tournament in Washington, DC

Chin Sifu taught his own version of Jow Ga, based on his previous experience in Eagle Claw, White Eyebrow, and his exchanges with Muay Thai and Wing Chun fighters. He encouraged his fighters to bring their past experiences in other disciplines, such as boxing and Tae Kwon Do, to enhance their understanding and execution of his Jow Ga.

Unlike many Kung Fu stylists of his time (including many of his contemporaries in Jow Ga), Sifu emphasized fighting–not forms and Lion Dance–and his training emphasis was on developing superior physical strength. Though his students varied in their own way from Sifu’s basic philosophy, all represent some piece of Dean Chin’s training and knowledge.

The DC Jow Ga Federation are the descendants of Dean Chin’s Jow Ga lineage, and we strive to keep his art, his history, and both his teaching and combat philosophies alive.

This page intends to share with the reader as much of Sifu Chin’s Jow Ga as possible, and hopefully to encourage you to seek out a Jow Ga Sifu to learn the art for yourself. We intend to support ALL descendants of the Dean Chin lineage, as well as all other branches of Jow Ga. American Jow Ga is one of the youngest branches of the Jow Ga Kung Fu style.

We welcome feedback! Please leave a comment or question!

Greetings from a fellow kung fu-er. Had heard lots about Jow Ga from the DC folks and finally got to see it and learn more. You all have a pretty strong group. Hope to see more in the future.

Glad to see you doing something online and youtube with your Kung Fu Maurice! You have too much knowledge not to share! Mine will be ready soon, and maybe you can help me get my site going. Keep up the good work brother.

I only hope that I can contribute in a way that further promotes the teachings of Sifu Dean Chin in a positive way.

I really don’t feel like the DC Metro area of Jow Ga practitioners give public displays of respect and remembrance to Sifu Dean Chin.

DC has already lost most of China Town so have have to hold on to the memories and traditions.

I have an opinion about the abandoning of Dean Chin forms for HK forms. I don’t think the HK versions are better (or the other way around), so I don’t understand the fascination with keeping up with China. Dean Chin didn’t “keep up” with anyone. He made his own path, base on his knowledge base. It’s up to us to take that, add our own and then go forward. I’m not crazy about reversing what Sifu did to make it “authentic” or one with everybody else. But each their own.

Is there a school of Jow Ga Kung Fu in DC? I want to enroll my daughter. I was in the school in Chinatown in the 80’s when i was a kid and I think it would be great for her also. Thanks,

Yes, how are you? There are several. Rahim Muhammad has one on U Street and 14th–the Hung Tao Choy Mei Academy. Raymond Wong has one at 2nd Street and Florida Avenue. Both in Northwest. Sharif Talib has a class in Northeast (I’ll have to get back to you on the location). There are links to all three on the main page. Thank you for your comment!

Greetings. My name James J Brooks. I hope that someone may place me in touch with or have knowledge of one of Sifu Chin’s former students and my Sifu, Robert Gibson. Sifu Chin referred to him as ” Gib ” & Robert would recall me as ” JJ ” from his days in Staunton VA. Any help in this matter would be much appreciated. Sincerely, JJ Brooks

Hi, I’m not familiar with him but I can ask around. Do you know about what years he trained at Jow Ga? There were about 4-5 generations of students who came up together and that will give me a better idea who to ask.

Robert lived in Southeast DC. Upon his return from Viet Nam & service in the Army as a Ranger, I’m pretty sure he studied & instructed at what was then called the Jow Ga School of Kung-fu in Southeast DC. The time period would have been early to late 70s. I began studing under him in ’81 to ’84. Robert had Master Chin sign off on my certification in the Small Tiger Form. Robert may have passed on as Sifu Chin has, it would just be nice to know & maybe even get in touch. Thank you for such a prompt response. If texting is an easier option 815-944-2654.

Is it okay if I pass on your number to a few of the elders? That will get you to them quicker. I was in the school during that time, but only knew the ones who were in the school or came around. Do you remember a Ricardo Ho or Craig Lee?

Yes please pass my number on & they may contact me anytime. Robert was staying in Staunton, VA which is where we met. I’m not sure but he may have even been w/ Sifu Chin in the late 60s. I know he was like a fixture at the school because except for the Army, Kung-fu was his life. I believe he did mention someone named Ho. Let me dig out some history – I should still have those papers somewhere. Gib was like 6’3″, slim but muscular, hands like lightning, medium afro hair & as Sifu Chin would say ” cats eyes “. Brown eyes w/ hazel specks. The school was his family. Thanks again & if I find the info, I shall try to scan it & forward it to you. Thanks again.

Greetings, I hope this message finds you all well. I was wondering if anyone knows of a Jow Ga school or training group or anyone who trains in South or South west Florida? I have to relocate to the area to care for my aging mother but want to continue in my Kung Fu studies. I have some training in the first form of Jow Ga under Sifu Chin’s online school but I am looking to now hopefully train with a group of like minded individuals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
